I'm looking to buy either a small backhoe ,or small mini excavator to use around the farm. I'm leaning toward a mini ex. Pros of mini ex: more powerful hydraulics , can lift more, spin 360 deg., can add thumb as it is plumbed with aux hydraulics cons; only moves at a snail's pace about 3 mph. A fair comparison to a full size TLB is an 8-ton excavator, a 3.5-4 ton machine will definitely be outclassed by a backhoe when digging deep, excavating large volumes or lifting heavy. In my case digging ~2' deep the mini ex was as fast or faster than my Case 480E. It depends on how big your mini excavator will be. I have a 6 ton mini ex, it's arm/bucket specs are slightly behind the Cat 416 (12.8klbs/7.2klbs vs 11.1klbs/5.6klbs). To be fair, the 416 weighs 11klbs more than the KX057. I'd rather have my excavator than a backhoe, although stronger (bigger) would be better, sometimes.
Seems the excavator is spec'd in terms of lift and the backhoe is spec'd in terms of digging force. Really, just want to know how they would compare digging a single pit. Dec 14, 2018 / BH77 backhoe vs KX008 Tiny-Mini Excavator About 10 years ago my brother bought a Bobcat CTL, and bought a 9 ton excavator about 7 years ago. He kept his backhoe, but the CTL and excavator does 90% of his work, along with a Case 650 bulldozer-prepping new house sites, septic installations, basement excavation, etc.
Was looking at the green tractor with the backhoe on ebay. Just incase you haven't already had the experience. A smallish 4 ton mini excavator can almost handle the job you would do with a full size backhoe like a JD310 but the green farm tractor with a add on backhoe is quite weak and jerky and hard to do good work with.
I'm fairly certain a current model 12000- 14000lb (50-60 series) class excavator would hold its own against a backhoe and 18000lb (70-80 series) class for sure and may be a tad stronger.
